Tennis Club Kordin traces its origin to 1979 when Mr. Lorry
Sant, then Minister of Lands, passed over the Kordin Naval
prison yard and two adjoining halls to the newly formed
Paola Tennis Club. The yard was asphalted and four tennis
courts were constructed. In 1988, for some reason or other,
this club was disbanded. However, Mr. Joe Barbara retained
the premises and formed a new club under the new name of
Tennis Club Kordin.
In 1989 a new committee was elected under the leadership of
Mr. Benny Vidal. Together with his Committee, the newly
elected president set out on the arduous task of improving
the infrastructure of the Club. The four courts were
resurfaced with tarmac and new modern flood-lights were
installed on three of them and the fourth court with the
conventional system of flood-lights. A new wire netting was
erected around the four courts. The Hall-Restaurant was
fully refurbished with a large bar area, and comfortable
showers. A large stand was built on top of this area. The
entire premises, was given a new look, with all the
surrounding high walls being redecorated. The newly
refurbished premises were officially opened by the Hon.
Minister for Sport Jesmond Mugliett in the year 2000.
Tennis Club Kordin is today considered as one of the leading
tennis clubs on the Island with a membership of over
five-hundred members. Annually, the Club holds various
Team-tournaments, Singles’ competition and a mixed-Doubles
league. These events are extremely popular and well
patronized by the members of club. Coaching courses for both
children and adults are held ever Sunday from October till
the end of May.
TCK is very proud of its achievements in promoting the Royal
game of tennis in Malta. |
